East Wear Bay Archaeological Excavation: Interim Report 2023

Andrew Macintosh (Project Officer) and Tania Wilson (Project Manager)

• June 2024

Between 14 August and 29 September 2023, Canterbury Archaeological Trust (CAT) led an archaeological excavation on land at Wear Bay Road, Folkestone, Kent. The excavation revealed features and artefacts relating to occupation of the site dated from the mid to late Iron Age and early Roman periods. The continuation of a north-south aligned V-shaped mid Iron Age ditch was recorded. The ditch was succeeded by the establishment of a late Iron Age round-house and associated settlement activity. Following the demise of the round-house, a co-axial field system of early Roman date was set-out. The results represent a significant addition to the known archaeological resource within the local area, in particular the developing character of the pre-Roman landscape.
